Frost heave lifts posts whose base or depth does not suit the ground. Wind loads a solid fence. Single posts can be straightened and refixed. If many posts lean, the cause needs fixing: depth, base or post spacing.

When it happened
Leaning in spring after frost often points to frost heave. After a storm the cause is wind; after snow clearing or a car, an impact.
Base of the post
Look at ground level: is a timber post soft, a metal post rusted, or is the concrete base loose and moving with the post?
Section or gate
Is the section bent or is only the post leaning? Has the pedestrian gate started to rub? Photograph both.

Frequently asked questions
Sometimes a post can be straightened and refixed. If the base is loose or the post has rotted or rusted, it must be re-concreted or replaced, otherwise it will lean again next winter.
In winter, wet ground expands in frost and lifts posts whose base or depth does not suit the ground. In spring the post does not settle back straight. This is called frost heave.
Usually not. If the sections are sound and only a few posts lean, a repair costs far less. If most posts lean or the sections have rusted through, a new fence may be the better option.
